About Bust of Marianne

In May 1998, the Town Council of Viry-Châtillon presented the Town Council of Wokingham with the bust of Marianne, who is a national emblem of the French Republic. She is a personification of Liberty and Reason and represents the triumph of the Republic. Marianne is displayed in many places in France and holds a place of honour in town hallsand law courts. Her profile is on the official seal of France, French euro coins and French postage stamps.

On the sculpture base it reads “1988 – 1998 10ans d’Amities Wokingham – Viry Chatillon Marianne (par Poisson 1933)” On the plinth it reads “Presented to Wokingham Town Council by Councillor P.N Harding Town Mayor 1998-1999”
