About Jack Meatcher

Jack Meatcher was given a Civic Award in March 2004 for his dedication to the environment along with Nic Hopkinson.

The following is an extract from the Wokingham Times in 2004: –

Two leading members of the Holt Copse Conservation Volunteers team have been recognised for their dedication to the environment in this year’s civic awards. Nic Hopkinson, of Copse Drive, Emmbrook, set up the Holt Copse Conversation Volunteers (HCCV) five years ago. Both Mr Hopkinson, 58, and Jack Meatcher, from the HCCV, have put in hard work and a great deal of determination to establish the HCCV, which now numbers 20 volunteers.

The volunteers give their time to make sure the woodland area is monitored and wild life, including bats and birds, and flowers, are conserved. Father of three Mr Hopkinson said “it was a total surprise to have received this award – I didn’t even get a hint that something was going on. I have really enjoyed working on the conservation of Joel Park and Holt Copse and am pleased to have been recognised.” The pair have helped develop the education and leisure potential of the area for families from Wokingham, and this Saturday will be unveiling a new information board which will have details about wildlife, history and geology of the area.

Mr Meatcher said he was also surprised but pleased and very proud to have received the award. In 2002 the HCCV won the Golden Oak award for being one of the best conservation groups in Berkshire, and four years ago scooped the Dorothy Morley Conservation Award and won £750 which helped paid for tools and other equipment to help them with their work.

Jack Earnshaw, who nominated Jack and Nic, said “What they have achieved in just five years is fantastic and it wouldn’t have been possible without their dedication and determination. They both do so much behind the scenes to make sure volunteers are trained, working parties are in place and funding for projects is seen through. I’d like to thank them both for their sterling efforts.”
