Portrait of an Elizabethan Lady

About Portrait of an Elizabethan Lady

This work is of the late 16th century English School and has been restored. The lady is unknown although she is believed to resemble Queen Anne of Denmark.

A half length standing figure, in the dress of the period of James I. The face is turned in three quarters to the left, the side of her rather aquiline nose being in shadow. She is wearing a wig, with a string of pearls and pearl pendant, over all a tiara of pearls. She also wears a necklace of pearls and pearl drop earrings.

Her dress is a black velvet skirt and bodice with a stomacher and long sleeves of white lace with gold threads. A still standing white lace collar as worn by Marie de Medicis. Bright red rosettes with jewels decorate her shoulders and the top of her stomacher.

Down the length of the front of the left sleeve is a curious serpentine ornament, composed of metal discs with jewels on them. A gold ring is on the thumb of the right hand.
