Philip married Elsie Mabel (1918-2013) who also became a town councillor of Wokingham and who served as Mayoress during his mayoral years. A former civil servant, he gave devoted public service to Wokingham and its residents for many years, particularly the youth of the borough, where he was extremely active in the scouting movement— he, as group president, and Elsie, as secretary, were instrumental in fundraising for a new scout hut in Chestnut Avenue.
He received a Long Service Award for his unstinting contribution to school governance, latterly at Hawthorns Primary School.
In a Wokingham Times survey, conducted in October 1996, councillors were asked what their main pastimes were outside District occupations, family commitments and work. The busiest proved to be Cllr. Philip Hudson. Besides ploughing through council agendas on a daily basis and the compulsory visits to district offices Philip was president of the 1st. Woosehill Scouts; president of Woosehill Tennis Club; vice-president of a football club; a governor of Keep Hatch Junior School; trustee of Wokingham District Counselling Service, and was also involved in W.A.D.E. activities.
A former rugby player and scout leader he once boasted of a Pitman shorthand speed of 180 w.p.m. which he gained after the second World War..
He was a member of St. Catherine’s Parish Church, Bearwood, and as church warden he helped to organise the popular joint fete with Woosehill Church.
Philip died at West Oak Care Home on Thursday 27th June 2013 at the age of 85. His funeral took place at St. Catherine’s Church, on Wednesday 17 July and he was buried beside Elsie who had passed away a few weeks earlier, aged 94.
