Alfred George Skedgel

About Alfred George Skedgel

Alf was born in Brixham on the 7th September 1917. His mother’s maiden name was Soper.

Married in 1939 to Rosia K (Kitty) Cooper (1918-2005) in Brixham. They had two children, Janet S. K. (b. 1943) in Torquay, now Janet Stubbs, and Susan Skedgel (b. 1946) in Wokingham now Susan Pearton.

Alfred came to Berkshire at the end of the Second World War as a negotiator for Martin & Pole. A very successful business man he was promoted to senior partner in charge of the company’s Wokingham and Bracknell offices. The family first resided in Binfield and later moved to 188 Reading Road in Wokingham. In the 1960s they moved again to Copper Beeches in Murdoch Road.

Outside civic life, Alfred was a freemason for many years and founder secretary and three times president of the Wokingham Rotary Club. He served on the Board of Governors of Holt School and was chairman of Governors until his death. He was responsible for helping to set up the Wokingham and District Association for the Elderly (W.A.D.E.) and, indeed, negotiated the purchase of its premises on the Reading Road which they still occupy to this day.

He was also a member of the All Saints Church P.C.C.; a vice-chairman trustee and member of the Wokingham Football Club and vice-chairman of the Wokingham Chamber of Trade.

Alfred had a dread of doctors and was in hospital only once after he was diagnosed with cancer from which he died on the 27th of August 1982 at the age of 64. He was buried at All Saints Churchyard. After his death Kitty moved to Warwick to be near Susan and her grandchildren. She died in March 2005 and her remains were interred beside her husband.
