About Ernest William Goodchild

A native of Wokingham, Ernest lived at Hillside, Langborough Road, with his parents Mary Ann (b. 1863) and Joseph (1859 – 1900), his sisters Nellie (1888 – 1966) and Elsie (b. 1889), and his brother Dudley (1896 – 1916).

He married Winifred Alice nee Deadon (1901-1993) in 1930 and they moved into No. 3, Park Road, Wokingham. They had a son and a daughter.

He served as company secretary to Hughes & Co. (Reading) Ltd. for 32 years until his retirement in 1962.

Ever active, Ernest was a member if the Committee of Wholesale Tobacco Trade Association. He was invited to accept the position of national president but had to decline because of ill health.

A keen gardener, he was president of the Wokingham Horticultural Association and seldom missed any of the shows. He held a similar position in the Kestrel Lawn Tennis Club and was also associated with the Wokingham and District Arts Group, a member of which painted his portrait which hangs in the Town Hall. For some time he was a member of the Special Constabulary.

Ernest died on Friday, February 10th 1967 at the age of 72. He was cremated in Reading on the following Thursday.
