Elizabeth Alexandra Mary was born on 21st April 1926 to Prince Albert, Duke of York, later King George VI, and Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, daughter of the fourth Earl of Strathmore. In 1947 she married Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh (born Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark) with whom she had four children: Charles, Anne, Andrew and Edward.
Upon the death of her father in 1953 she ascended to the throne and was crowned on 2nd June.
Wokingham prepared for the 1977 Jubilee celebrations by holding a “Silver Jubilee Nearly New Sale” for a week in the former Casa Blanca shop, proceeds going towards the celebrations.
A number of celebrations took place, the highlight being a procession through the town led by a pipe band from the Arborfield Apprentices College. It began from the Youth Centre and wound through the centre of Wokingham finishing at Wokingham Football Ground where there was an exhibition on “Accent of Youth”.
Other events included displays of dancing given by Morris Dancers and the pupils of the Felicity Morgan School of Dancing; camping demonstrations by the scouts and girl guides; displays of marching and physical expertise by the Air Training Cadets and the Wokingham Gymnastics Club. To round off the week, a united church service took place at All Saints Church attended by the Mayor, councilors and other dignitaries.
Also, all over Wokingham there were street and school parties.
