This is a stamp comprising of a wooden handle with a brass block and a simplified brass broad arrow at the end. The broad arrow was a symbol of the British government and was used to mark government property, in this case in ink.
The broad arrow frequently appeared on military boxes and equipment such as canteens, bayonets and rifles. It was routinely used on British prison uniforms from about the 1830s onwards.
There is no record of how this item came to the Wokingham Town Hall or exactly what it was used for.
It is currently a criminal offence in the United Kingdom to reproduce the broad arrow without authority.
